Question about 282 w/Twin 6.2 performance

Post by o2manyfish »

Hello All,

We are in the process of purchasing an 05 282 with Twin 6.2 MX with B3s (not sure what pitch duo props).
with 330 hrs.

The survey inspection was done today. Fresh water lake, glassy conditions.

I was not on board, I am on the opposite side of the country.

The surveyor said the boat cruised at 30mph at 3000rpm and he said the mileage numbers were 'great'. He then said WOT was 4900 RPM and 47mph.

I was expecting a higher top end speed. The surveyor said the seller was driving and didn't bother to trim anything out, and that the water was absolutely flat. But from my experience knowing how to trim the boat out and adding some chop will get you some gain but not where I expected this boat to be?

From my readings on the boat and reviews on youtube the 282 with the 5.7 Mercs or 5.7 Volvos is capable of 60+ and the cruising speeds are in the high 30s to mid 40s in the 3000 to 3400 RPM range.

Surveyor ran the WOT sea trial with the engine hatch up. He said both engines performed perfectly, no leaks. Engines didn't have any engine codes before or after the test. He said the drives and props are in excellent condition. The boat has Mayfair Hydraulic steering. The steering tie rods are on the interior of the boat and he said those are shot, that the boat needs to have a tie bar put on on the drives and the issue would be solved forever.

Does anyone here have experience with this boat and engine combination that might be able to shed some light as to why the performance on the survey was below my expectations?

Thanks in advance for sharing you experience. I'm hoping to be an official member of Cobalt Chat before Santa visits everyone this year.

Yea surprised they got those wot rpms with it trimmed down. That's about max wot for those engines. Yes you will gain 10mph easily trimmed up. Why would a owner of the boat not trim the drives up? Has he ever trimmed them up? Pretty hard on the drives u joints if he never did. Hopefully Matt or the other 282 guys will chime in. Buy it your fine. Why would he ruin wot with the engine hatch open? He trying to rip it off? Crazy stuff right there. But welcome and congrats on the purchase!

Hey O2MF. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

Yes as the others mentioned that speed is within the range of that 282 with the small block engines and no trim input. Man that’s tough on that heavy boat trying to make speed ploughing through the water vs riding freely on top trimmed out.

Pitch of the props and drive ratio will also make a big difference. See if you can get that information.

Any pics?

Again welcome aboard mate!

Thank you for the posts and reassurances guys. My experiences with trimming boats is with my old Viking, our 07 Silverton. In which the trimming get you 2 to 3 knots at top end. And in the smaller boats had a Baja 29 Outlaw with Bulldogs and then trimming was about getting ontop of the water and then laying it out flat - full bow down to flying I don't recall that being such a difference - but then again probably never really tried that test.

As for the hatch being open. The hatch was only partially open so the surveyor could watch, listen and smell with the engines running WOT for anything being awry.

got a 282 with twin Volvo 5.7 GXi's @ 320 hp each... my top end is 61 or so with 1/4 fuel and 3 men.
I think I have Volvo F8 props which are about 26" pitch.

What HP are these Merc's... and what pitch props ? and what ratio out drive ?

Your going to be fine. Speedos aren’t accurate ( gps phone app is a better check.

Trimming will wake it up as BB mentioned as you should be in Fharen speed range.

I’m more curious about the add on hydraulic steering and absolutely need a tie bar if it’s full hydraulic to the helm.

He listed this boat on the Cobalt Boats for Sale Facebook page yesterday. Someone asked him the top speed and he replied "50 mph". Maybe he just never trims his boat, but I don't understand why it would run up to full rpm with the bow buried in the water.
