ikucera wrote: Mon Feb 22, 2021 9:33 am Appreciate the input. I pulled the back off the door to the head to get to the head unit. It looks like they wired the amp (which goes to the transom speakers) to the RCA front line out from the head unit. The fader now fades music to either front speakers in the bow/transom, or the 4 cockpit speakers.

It would seem like they should just hook the amp up to the RCA zone 2 out right? Sorry it’s been a long time since I wired a stereo myself.

Thanks ik....I actually reworded it slightly to make it more readable.

Ideally, in your case, yes -you want to have the transom speakers on the Zone 2 RCA outs like you mentioned powered by their own external amplifier. The other speakers would be powered by a second amplifier. Do you have a second external amp?

The fader function is fading between the FRONT and REAR RCA outputs on the PMX-5CAN unit in the diagram posted earlier.

If you only have one external amp, and you desire a second independently operated zone, you will have to choose between what speakers you want powered by your powerful external amp and what speakers you want powered by the less powerful internal amp of the head-unit. The internal Head-unit amp powered speakers will be wired directly to the head-unit.

Bottom line for Two Zone Audio...The easiest solution in your case if you currently have only one external amp powering everything; buy a second external amp for your zone 2 audio...connect it to the Zone 2 RCA out of the PMX-5CAN head-unit..and plug your transom speaker wires directly into that amp. Problem solved.

I only have the one 2 channel amp (which is currently attached to the new transom speakers). The cockpit and bow speakers are using the head unit.

So no way to run zone 1 (bow and cockpit speakers)off the head unit amp, and zone 2 (via the RCA zone 2 out) thru the amp to the transom speakers?

Again, really appreciate the great advice!!

Ah, with that configuration ik, yes you can simply unplug the two RCA jacks from the head unit to which your Wet Sounds amp is currently connected. Then connect those RCA jacks to the Zone 2 Line OUT from the Head-unit.

Like I mentioned above the transom speakers will then be receiving the more powerful Wet Sounds amplifier signal and the rest of your speakers will be powered by the less powerful Head unit. (sounds like a future upgrade could be in order ;) )
Enjoy. 👍

Anytime ik. I can also highly recommend the JL Audio M800/v2 for powering those cockpit, bow, and subwoofer speakers when you decide to upgrade. Talk to James Taylor at Creative Audio. His Cobalt discount and professional advice are terrific.
