Being a helicopter pilot I am kind fanatical about weight and CG. When you are loading up the family and heading to the lake, all that extra space starts looking attractive for coolers, bikes, water toys and other things which can add up quick. All that stuff, a full tank of ethanol free gas (beacuse it’s cheaper off the lake), a spare tire and other bits and bobs and next thing you know you’re over 6K.

The issue isn’t making it go, it’s controlling it and more importantly stopping it under control. If you are dragging your boat through the neighborhood to the local ramp, probably a low risk evolution. If you’re like me and heading down I-95, the risk increases significantly and that is where building in margin becomes important. I have a full-sized Suburban and have a 2001 226 which I tow on the freeway about 3.5 hours to lake Gaston. I am happy with that combo and confident that I can keep it in the box no matter what the knuckleheads up here do. There is probably margin there to toss a few things in the boat, but I don’t push it.

The basic math comes down to this: you are looking to tow a trailer which weighs as much if not more than your car. If you need to stop in a hurry, that’s a lot of energy decelerating at a rate slower than your car. Remember the velocity is squared and so even a little difference in relative speed and you and your trailer are swapping ends. This ends poorly 100% of the time.

Now, IF (big if here) you can stop the trailer in a shorter distance than your car, you are good to go, enter: trailer brakes. Most boat trailers have drum surge brakes. These are something, but not like the brakes on your car. The problem with surge brakes is that by the time they engage in an emergency stop the trailer has already ahead of the car from an energy perspective. Balancing that equation takes time and if you are maneuvering it gets even more sporty (see: swapping ends above).

This is not unsolvable, but If you do go down the road of 5K boat behind 5K car, then I would pony up for a sophisticated brake controller and vehicle commanded trailer Disc brakes. There will be a maintenance tail, but when you need to stop in a hurry you will be very happy you made the investment.

Maybe I’m just a natural pessimist who feels like if disaster isn’t happening right now, than it’s not far away. I’ve had too many close calls in my line of work to tempt fate on the weekends.

Have to agree on this one...you are pushing the limits pretty hard.

3800 dry weight of the boat
30 gallons of fuel (average) 180lbs
trailer at 1100 (average)
Coolers, toys, accessories---250

That's 5300 right there and my numbers are probably conservative. Now we haven't even talked about payload capacity of the vehicle as it relates to the total of tongue weight plus passengers & gear.

To me, the engine is the last concern...power is a nice to have, but stopping is a must. Heck in WW2, the army used a 40hp jeep to move 7,000 rail cars in rail yards. It always makes me shake my head when everyone goes to the power card. When I tow, I want in this order, Brakes, Brakes, suspension, Brakes, Suspension, Engine, and Brakes

Can you tow it, yes, it will definitely push the vehicle limits for sure. The Toyota tundra can supposedly tow the space shuttle...doesn't mean it's a good idea. Also as stated, if you go this route, pony up for the best brakes you can...and maybe some suspension help....

The first issue is safety (I think you need a greater margin of safety than the Palisade offers) and the second is warranty. We've been having transmission programming problems with our 2018 Honda Odyssey. I was surprised to learn that as part of the transmission fault investigation the service tech pull the "torque load readings" from the control module and determined that we had not exceeded our towing limit (we tow a single Sea Doo from time to time). So, secondary to safety, that is something to consider.

I can remember reading all the similar stories on another site (THT) with a great number of members in Florida. People claiming you needed that heavy duty diesel pickup to safely tow anything, and others saying no, I'm towing my 27 foot CC with a Chevy S10 just fine. Floridas greatest towing challenges seem to be the occasional tall bridge, or a slippery ramp. Everyone agrees brakes are key, and electric over hydraulic is king, especially on larger boats. But a well maintained surge brake system with discs really does do the job for most family sized boats. So go find a nice Cobalt but don't go crazy if someone offers you a great deal on one that's a couple feet longer than you were looking for, you probably can't pull it without a different tow vehicle. And make sure those brakes are in good shape.

New to the forum. I was reading this thread about the same time I was watching Youtube vids on boat ramp fails. Decided my 2019 Highlander is NOT towing my 2006 250. No margin, in multiple ways!

People keep talking about brakes, but transmission (specifically transmission oil cooling) is also a limiting factor in a lot of family cars. I’ve seen some aftermarket coolers, but they’re not super common.

That is correct about trans temps. To be honest I dont even think about them anymore as I wont buy a pickup without towing package, which includes one.

But if you cant stop in time because the trailer is pushing you - that can kill people. A burnt trans will just ruin your weekend.

When I was younger I worked at a John Deere dealership, one of my jobs was to pickup and deliver lawnmowers. One year my tow rig was a 2wd S10, 4 cyl, 5 sp, over load springs, the trailer was 20ft long car trailer with surge brakes. It looked ridiculous, heck I couldnt even use the mirrors most of the time. I would load it full 6 or 8 mowers some of them weigh 1000lbs each. Never had much trouble, (not a speed demon by any means with that power house) until one day when I was fully loaded coming down a very slight hill on a gravel road meeting a highway at the bottom. I went to apply the brakes (about 25mph) and it started sliding and the pickup ABS started going off - which basically eliminated the brake force. At this point I could feel the trailer pushing me. What a helpless feeling and to top it off a car was coming down the highway towards my drivers door. Finally I slid thru the loose gravel and caught some hard packed gravel road - the ABS quit pumping, S10 slowed, and I could now feel the surge brakes working and I got stopped inches from the highway as the car with an oblivious couple fly by(this is pretty much wide open country with no trees, you can see for a couple miles). When I got back to the shop I informed the service manager I was no longer saving them money by doing multiple pickups anymore. I had risked my life one too many times.

In this case looking back I think I had too much tongue weight and the front end of the S10 was now too light for the tires to get enough traction and they started locking up causing the ABS to kick in. When that happened there want enough tongue pressure to apply the trailer surge brakes just compounding the problem. If I had an electric brake controller that I am very used to I would have run the lever to manually engage trailer brakes and been much better off.

What is the vehicle payload? It's on the yellow sticker inside the door jamb.

The secret, I think, is to maximize physical coupling between the boat and the tow vehicle's brakes:

How do you get it in the water using boat ramp?

We call them "donuts" up here, as in "the kids were whipping donuts in the Walmart parking lot after the ice storm last night."

Well thanks for the tip. I hauled snowmobiles like that before but never the boat. So long, parking out in the back forty at walmart
