Boat Insurance

Post by bashohio »

Any recommendation of companies that people have used to insure their boat?
Cost?
Prefer not tied to a bundle with home, car, etc at this time.

Any recommendation on coverage details?

thanks!

I have state farm and will never have anything else. A7 backed my boat into the garage and took out my tower and I had a check in like 3 days. I've had other claims and always just as fast. Rates to me are just fine. I'll even pay more for great service.

Had Geico. Price was good the first year and then they jacked up my premium. Called Charter Lakes and they shopped my policy around (they are an independent broker) and got me a rate a little better than the original Geico rate.

United Marine Underwriter is the best coverage and at the best price. They are part of Chubb which is an A+15 AM Best rated carrier. I have State Farm for everything but my boat.

Boat US...they act as the agent. Currently, the insurance my two boats are under is Geico but it can change year to year. I also use them for my towing insurance.

I went with a local Travelers agent who insures a lot of watercraft in the area. Two boats and two SeaDoos are $953 per year total.

Definitely not Progressive. They are good at taking your premium but not so good at paying a claim. It took them almost a month to get a adjuster to actually look at the boat before he would approve ordering parts and then wanted to do as cheaply as possible. They wanted to weld a crack in the lower housing on a one year old boat. I ended up paying $2000 out of pocket more than Progressive would pay on the claim get the repair done right.
I just switched to Ski Safe, they have been good so far but all they have done so far is take my premium.

I am also with Ski Safe. Similarly no complains but no claims. They did seem well-reviewed when I shopped around.

We filed a claim with Ski Safe after our props struck rebar in Misery bay with our last Cobalt. They replaced the entire Volvo outdrive.
Also had a theft claim with our Donzi. No issues with that claim either.

No recommendations

Interesting thing about the Chubb recommendation

This was their former CEO Dean O'hare's boat

I worked at the Wentworth by the Sea resort during college. He kept the Lady Kath at the resort's marina for a couple of months each summer
