Snap OR Mooring Cover

Post by BarryC »

Good Morning,

Looking for opinions & thoughts....

I need a new cover and can't decide if I want a Snap Cover OR Full Mooring Cover. My boat sits up on the trailer in my driveway during the season. I like the snap cover for the ease of it and trailerable BUT like the full mooring cover for the full coverage out of the sun. I saw this mooring cover online, it has these side velcro attached canopy sides, pretty cool.

Thanks for the help in advance.
Have a good day!

Personally, I prefer the mooring cover for full protection. Plus I don't like the location of the snaps.
We just purchased a light weight breathable cover to use summer to save wear and tear on our expensive mooring cover.
We just roll it from back side to front side, the store in dock box on front of lift. One minute to take off, two minutes to put on.

I have both. I use the mooring cover on the trailer because it's waterproof and covers the entire topside. I use the snap on cover for when the boat is in the water. It doesn't keep the water out as well if it rains, but it is easier to put on when in the water. For trailering, it's the mooring cover all day long. My tonneau cover keeps coming unsnapped and pulling snaps at roadspeed. THen again it doesn't fit anywhere near as tight as what's in the picture

I would vote mooring cover. I have a snap cover but just ordered a mooring cover for our R5. The mooring cover covers more of the boat and yes you can have custom skirts made to cover the rest of the boat from the sun.

had snaps on my last boat, didn't like them on the side of the boat, just have mooring cover now and will never go back to snaps.

Personally, I’m more comfortable with snap for trailering. Never had a snap come undone, and Cobalt snap covers are LOCKED down tight.
I’ve never owned a mooring, so I really can not compare.

Never been a fan of all those snaps. They just seem after market to me. Our full cover also keeps all the spider poop off the covered surfaces.

I respectfully disagree. I’ve had 5 snaps replaced after trailering where the pulled out of gel coat. It sags, oools water (with poles extended), and many of the snaps are so loose they don’t even make a sound when pushing them on

I’m with you sailor, I have a bunch of snaps that are pretty loose and come in snapped while trailering. My bow and cockpit cover doesn’t pool water anywhere though. It is fairly tight but the major leak is below the windshield where there is a gap between the bow & cockpit covers. The water runs right down the windshield and right under the bow cover snaps. I have a mooring cover on order. With the way manufacturing is so far behind I probably won’t get it until fall but at least I will have it for next year.

I agree. I make boat covers and I actually wouldn't use any cover while towing. I was a mooring cover guy for storage and a snap in guy for slip but I love the mooring cover on my new to me R5. Will never use a snap in cover for storing in the slip again.

I’m with T. We only use the mooring cover for winter storage. Snaps on a daily basis which hold tight during trailering and water runs right off. (we do treat it every other year with 303)

Guess they don’t build ‘em like they used to. Bu’s fault.

I totally believe you Sailor.
Maybe you are on to something A7. Possibly, Cobalt changed suppliers?

I’d trust our snap covers in a tornado LOL.
Our snaps are so tight, total PITA, we have to take them apart one by one, or chance doing damage to the cover. No grabbing and ripping the cover off.
Snapping them back in will wear our thumbs out.
We run our slack poles tight…

I guess I just hate the look and feel of the snaps. I hold my arms and legs in the area the snaps would be in our bow, and I'm guessing they would be uncomfortable. Plus, detailing around them takes more time.

We used mooring cover all the time until this season. Most of the time, we had two people to handle it. I bought a light weight, silver cover with elastic all around. We have been using it the past month, comes on/off easily with one person, saves time and stores easy, keeps spiders off. Boat needs no extra cleaning. It saves our mooring cover for off season.

K, how does your light weight silver cover work with the tower? Fold the tower down then cover the entire thing?
