2019 r30 with twin volvos won’t start.

My BIL and his family took our r30 out this weekend and the helm suddenly became non responsive and both engines died. They got several messages and codes including some indicating the steering actuator lost communication with the helm. Batteries were reading 12.4 and 12.6 on a meter and we tried cycling on and off several times. Unfortunately, my dealer may not be able to service it by this holiday weekend and we have friends coming down. I’m planning on going down a day or two early to fiddle around with it. Not sure where to start though. I’m assuming I should check all the connections under the dash and the joystick. Are there any procedures for resetting the Volvo system that don’t require a dealer tool or scanner? Any other ideas???

I would be looking for connections back at the engine and batteries first. I know you checked for voltage at the batteries but did you check for voltage at other places? The fact that you were getting codes set and communication errors means the ECU is not getting proper voltage.

Sorry to hear about your Cobalt woes. I think the first mistake was lending her out to your BIL.

Yes sounds like a connection issue at first glance. Check under the dash and those connections around the engine.

Sorry for the delay guys! This is definitely beyond my skills. The port engine appears to have a burned out starter. It turned the engine a couple times and now it sounds totally stripped. The starboard engine that wouldn’t turn at all had a blown ignition fuse. We replaced it and it popped immediately. The dealer should be here this week and I’ll keep you posted....

That sounds pretty serious and will need a visual inspection as its very weird that there are totally different issues with each engine happening issues. In the mean time show us some pics!

So...update. Both motors were hydrolocked (2019 Volvo 300’s with 190 hours). Both starters were trashed from cranking on it. They were able to pull the plugs and replace the starters and everything works fine. The cause, it seems my bil’s granddaughter lost her hat and he came off plane from about 25mph straight to neutral. Reading up on water ingestion, but it seems like this shouldn’t happen so easily. Neither cobalt nor Volvo covered this $1800 repair under warranty. I’m pretty disappointed....

Ya. We’ve been slamming on the brakes for over ten years with this model (262 & 263). You would be disgusted watching how we stop.. Never had any issues though.

Thanks for posting and giving me something else to watch out for.
We have already starting turning the boat as we let off in throttle to keep the waves off transom speakers, which we never thought of until reading something on this site.
