R6 with Yamaha 300hp Outboard

Post by garttx »

Hey everybody, I know this model with th OB IS relatively new and didn’t know if anyone had and R6 with the 300 hp engine. I’m concerned about not having enough engine and wanted the 350 Yamaha but our dealer says that they have been having problems with that engine and it has been discontinued. Anybody out there have an opinion or real use experience if that’s enough engine for an R6? He cannot sell the MerCruiser since he is not a certified dealer.

The majority of the time will just be cruising around brackish water. I will trailer to go to some lakes and some water sports. Mostly tubing no wake sports.

Thanks !!!

Garttx...welcome to Cobaltchat.com.
There will be people with more knowledge answering soon, and I'm sure most will say bigger engine in a boat with that size, weight, and designated use.

Interesting they would offer a boat with a discontinued engine. Too bad your dealer doesn't offer Merc power.

Thanks so much for the help. I want to make sure that I explain it correctly. The boat is on the showroom floor with a 300 hp. They cannot install a 350. If we order a MerCruiser they cannot do the warranty work on it. My understanding is there a Yamaha shop. Also there is going to be an increase for the 2022s from what I understand.

I have read that an R6 inboard/outboard a 380 would be minimum I know with the straight outboard it has less weight. We are going to test drive the boat But did not know if anybody had one already. Thanks everybody for the help I truly appreciate it !!

In a boat that is designed for surfing and has tanks to fill for added weight, I'd think the weight of the outboard wouldn't matter as much as the HP.

Read the SC series threads. Plenty of outboard help in their.
Pain but do you have a merc dealer close to you. Your cobalt dealer can cover your boat the other can cover the engine?

Hey gartx. So glad you found us!

300HP on a 26' foot boat would be the minimum I would want since it is not a surf series. Step up to an I/O forward facing drive on a surf boat with tabs and tanks and 380 would be the minimum.

Like BBP mentioned, comb some of our other outboard threads.

Give us a pic of this boat.

And welcome aboard mate!

Thanks again for the welcome and help!! I have added some pictures. I do like the R6 I/O with the 380 However the majority of our building will be in salt water. It is either pull the trigger on this one or order with the Mer 350. I know prices are crazy for boats now and supposedly a 10% increase for 2022. Who knows ?

That surprises me that Cobalt allows dealers to only offer and service one of their engine brands / options.

Are their dealerships that only do Volvo or only Merc?

Since you are going to use this boat for tubing as well, ask the dealer where to connect the tubing line to the boat. The tower is for wakeboarding, knee boarding, and skiing only.

I just noticed the small flip down swim step in the motor picture. I need more room for my aat fass.

Thank you, right before the step down on the swim platform is the hole where the ski and tubing post screws in when you’re using it. It is probably about a 2 foot post that makes it go above the outboard motor. I believe it’s the circle in this picture.

Haha! I was thinking that as well, especially after a couple of drinks!

Fantastic
Another member here probably did not get that option as he was asking the same question but did not have the pylon.
Always good to check before you purchase.

I see this boat in your slip or driveway. :D
