storage locker pistons need replacing
storage locker pistons need replacing
The "SpringLift" gas pistons that hold the storage locker lid up are getting weak.
I would like to get replacements. Industrial Gas Springs (manufacturer?) only
sells wholesale, and I don't need 50 pistons. They sent me to McMaster-Carr,
but when I enter the product data from my old pistons, nothing matches.
Product data is: 3422NJ 0180N 133/07 A 15 SL36 #50
which I'm guessing is a 50-lb piston, maybe 38 inches extended?
Has anyone replaced these, or know of a resource/seller who can identify
the correct replacement info?

The original engine cover shocks on my R5 came from this place. Its who Cobalt uses for a lot of the struts on my boat I just called them up, told them the part number on the strut and I ordered directly from them.

Re: storage locker pistons need replacing
I just replaced the gas springs on my 2007 240’s ski locker. The original gas springs were Attwood Springlift SL-36-50#, which are made for Attwood by Stabilus. They are 8x18 (8mm rod x 18mm cylinder) with 10 mm nylon ball mount ends. Extended length (center-to-center) is 17.2”, compressed length is 10.2”, with a stroke of 7.0”. Force is 50 pounds for each gas spring. The Stabilus equivalent is 7436QU, but they don’t seem readily available.
The replacement I found is Suspa C16-04445. It is also an 8x18 with extended length of 17.2”, compressed length of 10.8”, stroke of 6.4” and a force of 55 pounds. The slightly shorter stroke and slightly higher force did not cause me any issues. I was able to buy a pair of the Suspa gas springs for $19 on Amazon.

I know this thread is old, but Cobalt used Attwood struts. Go to Backtoboating.com, they have a full line of Attwood struts by number and strengths. They are great to deal with. To convert Newtons (N) to pounds, multiply by .225. 0180N is 40 pounds.

I'm missing the math on this one. At least the example.Freddie wrote: Wed Aug 25, 2021 6:09 pm I know this thread is old, but Cobalt used Attwood struts. I guess I didn't notice the space or the extra 0 in front of the 180 through me off. I saw .0180N.
I see, said the blind man.

Re: storage locker pistons need replacing
I ordered some cheaper ones online from somewhere, the end fittings were wrong, I replaced the ends on two of them, sent the rest back when I came upon BacktoBoating.com. They actually had the Attwood ones that matched perfectly. I got the engine hatch number from Cobalt. The 70# for the engine hatch was backordered, so I got an 80# one. It works fine, but the 70# would have been better, I can tell its a bit strong.
The quality was obvious on the Attwood ones, worth the few extra bucks. Not all the struts with the same numbers are the same. It's nice to have all the hatches working as they should. No more ski locker dropping on my head!

These had the exact attachment fittings, and worked perfectly.okielaker wrote: Wed Jun 30, 2021 9:49 pm ok, ordered (2) Attwood Springlift SL36-50-1 Gas Spring

Thanks for the good advice, again, BB.
