Hey friends from Chattanooga Tennessee

Post by katoom450 »

I’ve posted a few things, but never really formally introduced myself! I just sold my 3rd Cobalt and just love the quality. We are waiting on an R6 that is going to be built in October (maybe).
Here are a few pics of the R5 surf we sold with boatmate trailer.
We bought the R5 last year and put 800 miles on it. We had a few issues but nothing major. Boat had 5.3 VP350
Had to pull back on the throttle quickly to avoid a personal watercraft and the engine died and would not restart because it was stuck in gear.
I eventually used my foot to turn the props and it went to neutral. All good after that
I heard the fuel pump screaming one time when i started it. That went away after running it down the river
The Garmin would not boot up occasionally
Finally the thing that helped facilitate the trade was that the trim pump died.
Hopefully we won’t experience many problems with the 2022 R6🙏

.
Thanks for the write up KB450. Great pics too.
Sorry to hear about the R5 woes. This seems to be more and more common with these newer models. It’s unfortunate as you read the various posts on our forum. (And these are only the ones we know about!). Let’s blame it on bu for now.

Hopefully your R6 will perform better…especially since these machines cost more than a 2nd home buyer’s house.
I will say that the surf wave these recently manufactured ones are producing are quite impressive. 👍🏻 Looking forward to your surf pics. 🏄🏾‍♀️

I bought a 2011 242 new, had no issues, then we bought a 2016 A25 and we had gauge issues, panels came loose, stereo issues, sea deck on the swim platform came up, nothing crazy but we would joke, we must have a cobalt lemon, but it is still better than most other brands :0). Now we have had a 2020 R7 surf with 112 hrs and no issues what so ever. My point being that even with our A25 and its various, lets call them quirks ha ha, Cobalt took care of us. I think boats are just that way. Over all for me, it’s been 10 years three cobalts and I’ve been very happy, even when we sold our A25 I felt like I was giving up a great boat! After seeing the wave on a recent R8 surf we have decided to trade our R7S for an R8S, can’t wait for our R8 surf to come!

Yes! I’m excited to surf the new wave too. I had trouble staying in the wave at 230lbs. Hopefully the new surf gate will create more push.
Seems to be very little comments on the difference between the two systems on here though. Maybe I’m missing it.

We don’t have a build date yet, our dealer is pretty confident we will see it March or April of 2022. I have really good relationship with our dealer but I’m skeptical I guess we will see next spring. I can tell you I’m looking forward to not having those huge tabs off the back while swimming and hanging out off the stern of the boat. Also really looking forward to having trim tabs again!!! I do wish some those that have upgraded from an R5/R7 Surf to the R6/R8 Surf would chime in with regards to the wave. I’ve seen a few guys post pics and have said it’s impressive but they have also said it’s there first surf boat so no frame of reference.

I'm guessing there are very few comments because there are very few here going from a R7S to a R8S. I'm over 230 lbs. so I wonder if I should try surfing? I think I'll just be the pilot.

I didn’t order trim tabs at first, but then went back and added them. The R5S rode really well without trim tabs, but I remember how much I loved them on my 94 Sea Ray 24ft bow rider.

We ordered the Carmel Carbon interior, ebony top, side and bottom with red boot stripe. Trying to be cool for the teens, or we would have ordered not so flashy.
All the lights, prisma tower, best stereo option, big Garmin, black windshield, bow filler cushions, soft cooler, heater, transom trim switch etc.

Now, I have to find a trailer. I’m going with Phoenix, or Loadmaster out of Ohio I believe. The boatmate was good except I had to be really careful not to drag the prop, so I’m going with someone with better prop protection for the forward drive.

I'm 6'3" and 255 and I can surf without the rope behind our R7S, keep at it and you'll get it. It took me a summer and I had to pick the brain of some of the younger kids. Things like foot placement and what type of board you use can really make a difference. I just like that it's something I can do behind the boat and not be sore or hurting for a day or two after, consequences of getting old I guess ha ha!

The last I spoke with a dealer they had to have the boat sold to a "customer" not stock to even get a build slot. With Cobalt losing a bunch of builds due to lack of resin and Cobalt having all the '22s build slots sold already I would not be scheduling any boating vacations before you see it in person.

You also dont see any wave reviews because the 8 was just released and the 6 was only released last fall. They just arent out there yet. The few photos I have seen the wave looks larger and better. I am watching also... The wife has went boat wild now and I think we will be getting a surf boat, so I am waiting to see how the 4 will pan out. If it has ballast tanks under the deck like a 6 or 8 I think that will be the direction we go.

I agree, I'm skeptical that we will see it before next summer. I guess our dealer must have a reserved slot that they are going to use. They've always been really up front and honest with us in the past, so I'm cautiously optimistic that we will see it in 8 months, but that's only if we don't see any other crazy stuff between now and then.

Hello from Murfreesboro (originally from Grundy County, closer to you)! Where is your boat docked? Looks like a really nice marina!

I have an R6 Surf and I can tell you right now that there is absolutely ZERO comparison with the R5 Surf wave and the R6 Surf wave. The R6 has WAY WAY more push and it is massive. My son is 6'3 250 and it pushes him. I'm 6'5 280 and it pushes me just fine as well. At some point we want to see if it'll push both of us at the same time! lol! The boat is amazing btw. I have the trim tabs as well and I will never own another boat without them. They really make the ride so smooth, no matter where everyone is setting. They don't work in surf mode though. I would also recommend the Platinum Sound...it is unbelievable. Also, get the 380 motor AT LEAST. 380 is perfect for this boat but you might want the 430 for the extra 2mph at the top end.

If you want to check it out, happy to show you around my boat as we are on Tims Ford Lake.

confession: I want to bring it down to Hales Bar and ride the river into Downtown Chattanooga at some point. I'll bet that's a beautiful ride, especially in the fall. :D

Thank you for that! That wave is WAY bigger!
We have the same interior ordered as yours! What color is yours on the outside?
I pretty much got all the options except Windless but I'm considering getting that too because the R6 anchor box is smaller than the R5. Got the VP380. Can't see the value in paying 9k for the extra 2 mph
Take some pictures if you think about it
We might take you up on checking it out!

About the ride up the river, It's really pretty in the fall for sure. The water is deep, but sometimes the current makes it weird to surf in, plus its colder because of the depth.

The Marina is Erwin marine in Chattanooga. We will keep the boat on a friends lift in front of his lake house. in the spring and summer. Water will be to low to put it on the lift when we get the boat in the winter so it will be on a trailer somewhere.
