R7 Surf windlass wont raise

Had new R7 out for first time. To get the Windlass anchor to wind up I had to help lift the Anchor chain the entire time. Anyone have this happen?

Sorry to hear. I assume you launched it ok so your familiar with the operating and it has power.

But the clutch in retrieval can slip as most are set to slip as posed to straining the motor on retrieving should it become heavy.

If that's the case simply tighten the clutch ( same torx as manual retrieve) .

I tie off the anchor rope once I'm anchored, as tugging on the windlass can quickly loosen the clutch.



And I had to learn to pull up over the location as I'm retrieving.

I noticed mine was slipping a bit during the initial demo/ride we took a few weeks ago. I don't have easy access to the boat. Is the manual retrieve "wrench" in the same area as the windless or will I have to remember to bring a set of tools with me? I see a similar adjustment in my future as well.

Hey tbully.

During the demo?? Was it not teathered off? Or was the salesman not pulling over the anchor spot?

Most windlass from Cobalt will have the wrench in the compartment.

If you have 2 torx on your winch. 1 is clutch and 1 is manual retrieval ( clutch needs to be realesed in the event of failure)

Some even have a secondary long bar stored in the anchor locker for easier retrieval should you have to manually pull it up.

The clutch adjustment is key as you would rather have it slip slightly should you get hung up.

Most clutches get slippy because settings are light and using the windlass to pull the boat is a clutch slipper and will put it out of adjustment.

So when anchor is deployed..

Always tie off your rope portion to the compartment cleat so bow bounce won't chatter the clutch or gears.

When retrieving idle up slow to your spot as you bring it in( listen for winch motor change in load )

As the anchor aproches the roller , bump bump in slow as the swivel will drop the anchor in the correct position.

Too fast and if anchor is swaying anchor may come in upside down . Never happened on the Cobalt as the guides below the roller are unique.

( plus winches are powerful) so the last foot of retrieval needs to be slooooow)

And keep it teathered once inside and allow the teather to hold most the anchor weight if the adjustment allows snug but anchor not dangling.

Here's a pic of the wrench that does clutch and maybe retrieval if I felt strong!!

Thanks for the response. Sorry for being brief earlier. I was in the middle of 10 things. I’ve used windless setups before so no issues.

During our delivery/introductory ride a few weeks ago, I just noticed a few slips of the clutch during retrieve. I made a mental note knowing I may have to adjust in the not-so-distant future. I just couldn’t remember offhand if the wrench was in that compartment or not.

Mine was with the manuals. It is a special wrench. Standard wrench won’t fit it.
