2000 5.0 GI DP Fluid Leak

Hey Guys,

Asking for a friend, he noticed a leak coming from the lower unit area. I uploaded a picture for you guys to look at.

The fluid is a red color.

Let me know what you guys think it is.

Any help is appreciated.

Hey TS91.

That's the power trim fluid leaking in the pic of that hose. ....Power steering fluid (red in color) is what type of fluid you use when topping off the power trim reservoir located normally at the stern in one of the back corners. It has a yellow cap on the top of the reservoir. Fluid is pumped from that reservoir...thru those rubber hoses....into the rams on each side of the outdrive to either raise or lower it.

That's the power trim fluid leaking in the pic of that hose. ....Power steering fluid (red in color) is what type of fluid you use when topping off the power trim reservoir located normally at the stern in one of the back corners. It has a yellow cap on the top of the reservoir. Fluid is pumped from that reservoir...thru those rubber hoses....into the rams on each side of the outdrive to either raise or lower it.

Any ideas on ways to eliminate the issue?

The hoses didn’t appear to have holes or even be loose.

The swedge crimps leak ( where the rubber line enters the fitting) . As we know they rub against the housing it’s an eventual failure.

Now the bummer.. difficult to get the inside fitting ( the other side of that line), so removing the drive will be needed to properly get it secured and lined up so it doesn’t push outward against the housing.

Time to check bellows anyway right?

Guess it’s just that time...

I replaced one of those lines two weeks ago on my 1999 226. You can change the lines without removing the drive but it is not easy. You have to turn the outdrive all the way to the Port side and slide a stubby 7/16th wrench through the three inch gap allowing you to break loose the fitting nut that secures the line to the manifold. It may take some time and a few different angles, but it can be done. I purchased my line from Cecil Marine Online. Do not forget to buy the O-rings as well!
