New Member - 2002 Cobalt 240 from Connecticut

Picked up my 2002 Cobalt 240 back in late May. Absolutely love it. My new neighbor on the dock came over to me and said, "nice boat, did you know that Cobalt is considered the Rolls Royce of boats under 30 ft?" The brand really does have a fantastic reputation. The boat has the 496 HO with only 300 hours and is outfitted with what seems like most of the options that were available at the time. The boat is running strong but does seem to be running rich (little fuel around dock when idling/smells of gas when idling/trolling). Seems like all I can get for gas around here is 91 octane so I am wondering if that is the issue. Anyway, happy to be here!

Welcome from California! Like to hear how she performs with that package. Do you leave it moored in the water during the season?
496HO idle rich and it’s also common to get soot lines in the transom .
It’s not a issue as most fuel calibrations for marine engine (lugging ) platforms are set rich. Yes you can go to 87 octane and decrease some aspects of enrichment as a slower burning 91 octane isn’t required or even recommended for that series of engine.

Your neighbor is spot on with his assessment. Yours is shining so much I can see the trailer reflection in the bow. I thought it was a mark on the hull at first.

Did you have the hull bottom painted or did you purchase the boat that way?

Nice choice of Cobalt! we just got a 240 as well and love it more and more every time we take it out. Must be a rocket ship with the HO motor!

I keep the boat docked in the water through the season and bought the boat with the hull already painted. Haven't had a chance to go out by myself but seems to do mid-high 40's kts with a decent crew (6 people) and pretty full tank of gas. Jumps right out of the water so I'm thinking that I may be able to put props on there with a bit more pitch or a bit larger. I have dual 48-823667 26P's on there now. Tach is faulty so unfortunately can't tell what the top RPM is right now until I get the tac to Faria. Don't have a good pic of the engine right now, bilge/engine was pretty dirty when I bought the boat (when I took the picture). That's her though!

Lockey, what're you running about for cruise/top speed with your 240? Is it bottom painted? Power on mine is phenomenal but I thought I'd get a little more top speed. Expected to run mid 50 kts. Still need a calm day, light load, and fully functioning tac to know for sure what the top speed is though.

Hey, on that model, where do you store all your tubes? I’m guessing you store under the helm storage point. I see the storage on the back for possibly a wakeboard correct?

Aslan, I know you have commented several times on how much storage there is in a 262, but it doesn't compare to a 240. Starting in the center of the transom there is a cabinet with an air pump and a place to store ropes. To the right in the walkthrough theres a hatch for wet storage with a hanging basket. On the port side there is wake board storage with a board rack. A full size adult can drop in there for access to the port side engine. Forward of that is storage all the way to the co-captains chair. Then forward of the helm, just like the 262, and wrap around storage under the bow. And then the ski locker....

The hatch on the upper swimdeck is for a ladder that was probably removed with the extended swimdeck, but they leave a nice grab handle that is just forward of the ladder.

That thing will be a blast with that motor! Congratulations on your purchase CT and glad to have you here!

When I saw that engine pic I was a little perplexed by the fact that there were no openings to the port and starboard side of the engine (which as you know is a HUGE storage area for us....(we store six tubes back there)). Makes more sense now.

Ytmsn is right, there is an incredible amount of storage on the 240. one of the reasons why i like it so much! im OCD about tucking things away and keeping the interior of the boat free and clear. that port side storage compartment.... you can literally lay down and take a nap in there lol, its like an Aft cabin!

CTriver, Im still playing around with speeds and RPMs. its really hard to read the tach on the perfect pass system, i wish it had the old school needle tach. it would be so much easier to look down and get a quick reading. we were out in the ocean on saturday and there was some decent chop, so i was averaging 25mph at 2200 rpm. Mine came from the factory with F7 props on the Gi, and i know if it had the GXI 420hp then they put F6 on it to get those RPMs up. Ive had the family with me every time ive been out so far so i havent done too many WOT runs, but it gets up around 55 at 4200 rpm. im sure it could go faster with less people and trimmed out fully. I would think your HO could hit 60+. I really didnt get the big block for top end speed, just wanted that out of the hole torque! especially if we have the boat loaded up. oh, and my boat is not bottom painted

It looks like you still have the stock props on it. Cobalt does a good job putting the right props for the boat and giving you a good rpm for cruising. I would probably leave it be.

AsLan7, will do the next time im packing up to go out. we have a 9 month old infant and i tucked a whole basinet in there for him! of course we didnt put him down in there haha
