Setting power trim.

Post by Nicad »

Been playing around with the trim on my 5.7 2001 226 (Volvo).
It seems for cruising once planning it feels more efficient to raise the motor a bit.
Is there a tilt strategy for different water conditions?
Get it under way all the way down, then raise it up till it Bobs ? Then down a bit? In rough water is it better to have the trim more in the up position?
I am a relative rookie on this type of boat. Hope this isn't too dumb a question
Thanks.

Everyone one and loads are different. I put mine down a bit in rough water. Everyone's family can handle each condition differently. My kids and family don't complain too much at anything so we go as fast as we can to stay dry and smooth. I play with the trim up and down till it feels good without getting beat up. Normally the rougher it is the slower you go and more trim down.

I have only put about 4 hours on my boat but have concluded that the duoprop is much less sensitive to trim than the single prop Mercruisers I've had. My last boat, a 6.2 L 320 hp Chaparal with1 prop, was very sensitive and to get top end speed, I would have it trimmed out quite a bit. Another factor may have been that it had a 23" prop which was more for speed. It seems to me the Volvo 2 prop is set up for more low end torque for coming out of the hole.

Another thing interesting to me is if I was going down the lake, say around 45 mph in the Chaparral and started in a turn, Iwould need to put the trim in and slow down some or it would cavitate. The Cobalt with duoprop digs in without slowing down, a very reassuring feeling.

When BB mentioned loads, it made me smile as I remembered my 1st boat, a Seastar tri hull with a Mercrusier 4 cylinder. If there were 6 people in the boat & someone wanted to ski, there would be one skier, one driver, & 4 sitting in the bow trying to get it to plane(120 hp). Since I don't have it in my signature, the Cobalt is a 2017 220s 280 hp with duoprop.

Thanks

I couldn't find any spot that made a real difference in speed.
My old Alpha was very sensitive, and it seemed that a quarter way up gave it the best speed at any RPM.

The dual prop seems completely different.
What trim level do you guys find as the most efficient in calm water?

For me It's just a speed curve. First planing I barely need any trim. At WOT I'm around 7.

I'm an SX drive - single prop. Boat is also only 19 ft long so it's really sensitive to trim, especially during turns.

I honestly don't even think about it anymore. It's like muscle-memory at this point. Depending on the prop is different too but I've found that this one feels right cruising at 3/4. I don't really look though, I just find my thumb trimming up and down based on what i'm doing and what i'm feeling/hearing. It's pretty cool in my third season. Very much in tune with it.

I am no stranger to piling people into the bow to pull someone.

Tuscany, had ours out today, just the two of us. It seems I'm always around 3-4. I ran WOT and hit 50, then adjusted trim both directions with no change. It's just different I guess than single prop. I don't even tuck the drive in when I'm starting out. That said, I have not pulled any skiers yet or had more than two people total in the boat so that may be totally different.

Thought there was another trim thread. Anyway for me seems to be max speed at/around 3.8 on guage with gear full fuel and water and peeps.

Yes there was. But I agree with everyone it doesn't take much trim with these dual prop drives. Actually with my engine I can't hear it smooth out like a small block. I just push the throttle down further if I want to go faster.lol

Here's the original trimming thread:

But there was another one that redirected into Trimming that I also posted this link from Cobalt:
