Out with the old - 2013 R5 - In with the new - R6 Surf

Post by IMALLYNN »

I'll be listing my immaculate 2013 R5 for sale soon and will be ordering a new R6 Surf. So, if you know of anybody looking for a great condition used R5, check out the For Sale listings in a few days.

Secondly and perhaps more importantly, what type of discount (%) off MSRP are you currently seeing from dealers? Seems I paid about 70% or so of MSRP last few Cobalts. Is that still about right? The R6 Surf configured right at $250K (basically all options and 430hp), so hoping 30-35% off is realistic.

Thanks

Yea good luck on that discount. Cross your fingers. Every dealer is diff and it's your second boat from them so who knows. Welcome let's see pictures of this r5!

I bought my R5 Surf in 2018 at about 20% off from a local dealer here in northern MN. I could have gotten a little bigger discount at another dealer but it wouldn’t have been local. I’m surprised the R6 MSRP is all the way up to $250k as mine with the 380 nicely optioned was $165k msrp and $132k plus tax after the discount. The trailer was another $6500.

I was surprised also. New boat pricing is getting a little out-of-hand and maybe even a little offensive. That said, I guess it's also dragging up the prices of used boat, so maybe it's a wash?!?!?

I'm guessing you bought from Brad at C & C in Crosslake? Our MN lake house was right around the corner from there.

I just ordered a new CS23 last week and got about 18%-19% off MSRP. It was closer to 25% a year ago but from my research 18-19 is where it’s currently at in my area. Not sure if it’s different for different models? CS23 is the only boat I was really considering so didn’t price shop on other models.

For the R6-Surf? Dang. My gut tells me you might give them a 20% - 25% haircut. For ~$12k - $15k net or ~5% of total , you might be able to work yourself into an R8-Surf, but I get it, you have to draw a line somewhere. What kind of delivery date are they giving you?

Never used current boat in salt water and have no intentions of using new boat in salt water, but for a few bucks, I figured the titanium coated outdrive would be "cool"? Seems it was about the only box left unchecked, so I thought, what the heck!

Local dealer replied yesterday with 15% off MSRP. I also inquired with a couple other dealers, so we'll see what they come back with. If 15% is the number, I'd be inclined to wait a few months and see what happens to the general economy.

We also considered the R8, but it seems like it would be too big and heavy when not surfing.

Looks like a great build and you will love the surf function as even old guys like me can enjoy it. :D Many of the 100+ hours a summer we put on ours is with a surfer or wake foiler in “tow”. I did get it from C&C and they have been easy to deal with for storage and maintenance. We are on the south end of Gull near Madden’s.

I agree with you there, getting ridiculous. But we all continue to pay it. I bought our new 242 from a dealer in 2011 for 65K and then sold it in 2016 for about that same amount. Then bought our new 2016 A25 for around 120K, It's like the price doubles every five years.

That seems to be the trend. I can tell you just from the 19 R7 I bought to the new R8 it is about a 30-40k price increase just in a standard r7 to R8.

Hmm. 15% is somewhat deflating. I would not return the message, and when he called me, I’d tell him at that price I’m now looking at a Formula. If you stick with same power unit as your R6, I doubt there would be an appreciable difference in handling of the R8 v R6 (my opinion). These guys made good money last year. Malibu paid their dealers $20M (~3% of sales) of incentives FYE 06/30/2020 and brought $0.08 - $0.09 of every $1 to the bottom line. Q1 results were even better, but it wasn’t because of the Cobalt line - production was down due to the ongoing expansion, yet MBUU is up $30 since this time last year. All this being said, Cobalt may provide dealer incentives to start filling up production slots to increase top line sales, or not. Good luck.

All good points. Seems I always got around at least 30% off MSRP on every new boat I've ever bought. All Cobalts and a few premium brand ski boats. Their business is booming right now and they want to capitalize on every opportunity to maximize their gross margins, which is fine, I'm a Capitalist also. However, if I can't get close to at least 25%, I'll carry on with our perfectly running and looking R5 and wait for the worm to turn, which it definitely will at some point.

We'll see....

I drove past my Cobalt dealer today here in Florida. He has VERY few boats in stock. All brands seem to be selling well, or they just can't get new boats in.
