Chesapeake Bay questions. Moving to North East MD

Post by ourlee »

Hello,
We’re moving to North East MD and we’re going to wet slip the boat in Charlestown. The salt content is pretty low at the top of the bay but I’m wondering if I should bottom paint to be safe. We’ll be running down to Baltimore and Annapolis a few times a season but I’ll remove and clean the boat the next day.
Also, will I run into any problems handling the bay in my 07 250? My 6 mile NJ lake is super mellow, I’m guessing the bay will be harsher the further south i venture.
Many thx,
Rick

Your 250 will handle light chop there well but if the wind kicks up be sure to button up when driving into it.

Careful about the tides as well. There are some shallow spots that can always rear their ugly heads if you are not paying attention.

Do you have the Navionics App or something similar?

The bad thing as soon as you bottom paint the hull your value goes down fast if that matters to you. Also as soon as it hits the salt water the same.
But yes I agree with A7 get a chart plotter-Garmin?
I forgot but where do you boat now?

Lake Hopatcong in North NJ. I’ll do lots of recon on the wave runners. This is our first boat, lots of effort went into purchasing it, but I’m reading a bow rider is not great in this environment. Perfect 6 mile lake boat, big bay boat TBD.

Depending on how often your going to get to the boat, rack storing it might be the way to go. I'm with BBP I won't look at anything that has bottom paint. Just a thought..

Appreciate the thoughts on bottom paint. We’re retired, we’ll be a mile from the slip just like now, out every day.

Is there a market for a super clean 07 250?

Bottom paint is a tricky thing. Once you start it, you pretty much have to keep doing it, especially if it an ablative type paint. What is the marine growth like in your area on wet slipped boats? We would get about 18-24 months in Galveston bay, but that was more for hard growth--we would still see soft growth (or the green skirt as it's known) after about 30 days if the boat didn't move.If I understood your post, you'll only be leaving it wet overnight or a few days at a time max. In that case, no bottom paint is necessary IMHO, but if you were going to wet slip it 24/7, then yes.

No, my bad, wet slipped early April to November. I’d just yank it if I roadtripped to Annapolis (more salty). Just got off the phone with a Chesapeake Cobalt dealer. He said I gotta do bottom paint and the bay weather is tricky. I could find myself in Annapolis eating lunch on a gorgeous day and weather could roll in fast,45 miles from home, in a bow rider

So true...and then you become a bath tub. You really got to watch that weather all the time. We do the same on Lake Erie and we are not even close to 45 miles from home. A boating course for you and your mate (if you have not done so yet) is also invaluable. We did ours through Boat US.

I will 100% do a course. Son 2 (working remotely in our house for a year with no end in site) is coming with us and he’ll be joining me. He’s 23 and all his college bros hang on the water with us. He can use the boat and skis anytime he likes but we need to get smarter on this body of water. I love my 250 so much, not sure I can part with it.
