Stereo overhaul for 232/242

The stereo system in our ‘07 232 was all original and in desperate need of an overhaul. After digging around the boards and reading up on line the only real path forward was a complete overhaul. The old wiring, lack of amps and obsolete head unit were just too far gone to be salvaged for anything current. Thus the search began to piece together a system that wouldn’t break the bank but would sound like it did.

There are many more elaborate setups than what I got, but this one is mine. Needed something loud enough to sound good while out of the boat hanging at the sandbar or beach. Going in my requirements were 6 x 6 inch speakers, addition of 2 x 10 inch subwoofers, all speakers RGB LED capable, Bluetooth head unit w/ wireless remotes and proper amps. I looked through wet sounds, fusion and JL, all had great stuff but the tab kept running pretty high. I shopped sales, discounts and even open box to keep prices down as much as possible.

Digging around a bit more stumbled on the Infinity Reference Marine series of speakers, produced by Harman. I had some infinity stuff in my car back in the good old days as well as Harman Kardon speakers at home, were always good stuff. The 6” speakers are 75W RMS and the 10” are 250W RMS both at 4 ohms. Based on reviews and price settled on these. Now to build out the amps. Decided on JL Audio 600/6 amp for the speakers and Rockford Fosgate 500W mono for the subs. The RF sub was 500W RMS at 2 ohms, which worked out great for the 2 subs in parallel to get 250 each. The JL was also a perfect fit with 75W RMS per channel which lined up with the speakers. I went with a pretty basic Fusion MS-RA70 head unit as it head everything I was wanting and as the biggest plus actually fit in the single din space already in the glove box without modification. The RA70 has multizone, Bluetooth, is compatible with the fusion wireless remotes and also can hook up to the fusion app that can control everything. Last piece was a RGB controller. I wanted one with an audio input to follow the music so grabbed the wet sounds product, though this was a little pricey relative to other LED controllers out there.

So, with parts in hand I crawled in to the boat to start and immediately decided I’d call an installer instead of spending a weekend or two contorted in storage compartments. Shout out to Corey at Corey’s Toys and Tunes in Fort Walton Beach for doing a great install. Worked through the week to have us ready to hit the water by the weekend.

Everything sounds and looks terrific and didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. Parts list below:

I did a ton of shopping around. Even worse was right now it’s tough to find equipment, especially amps. Shortage of supply with historical high demand has put everything for boats on back order!

Really enjoying it. This is a great boat for us and with a little cleaning up and updating here and there looks much younger than it’s age. Appreciate all the ideas and support from the boards!

This isn’t much of a quality audio recording, here are the LEDs in action on the 4th of July. Stereo sounds great and haven’t had any issues to speak of. Wireless remotes and FusionLink App really make life easy. The subwoofer mounting location is my only possible meh of the project. The location is great ergonomically and visually but may not be the best acoustically. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of bass, but I am glad I went with 2 tens in that location for a fuller sound.
