R6 - Trimming outdrive with engine off
R6 - Trimming outdrive with engine off
I am the owner of a 2022 R6 with the Volvo 380 DP engine. The boat will be stored on its trailer whenever it is not in use which leads to my question. With my previous boat, after loading the boat onto its trailer, I would turn the engine off and then trim the outdrive all the way up before pulling the boat/trailer out of the water and up the boat ramp. With the R6, when I turn the engine off, I lose the ability to trim the outdrive. Is there a way to turn the engine off and maintain the ability to trim the engine? Or am I overthinking this - would it be safe to trim the engine all the way up before turning the engine off?
Re: R6 - Trimming outdrive with engine off
After you shut off the engine just turn your key back to the run position with the engine off and still be able to use the trim. I thought that I can still trim my R5 with the engine and key off but now I can’t remember... curiosity has me so I’ll have to check it out today now!

Something isn't wired right if you can't trim it down or up with the engine off.
Just make sure you are not turning the battery switch off. Then it won't work.

Hey MDkirk. So glad you found us!
We had a 2002 Cobalt with a VP rig that could be trimmed from the throttle with the key in either the ON or OFF position.
Our current 2005 Cobalt has a Merc rig and can only be trimmed from the throttle with the key in the ON position. We trim to the midpoint on the trim gauge when approaching the trailer. Anything higher will put a slight strain on the U-joint coupler while in gear. After the boat is firmly on the trailer while in the water, we turn the key off. We then turn the key back on (without starting) to trim the outdrive all the way up and subsequently pull the boat out of the water. A little cumbersome but it works.
We also pull the boat & trailer half way up the ramp with the key in the OFF position; lower the outdrive using the transom remote (which works with the key in the off position) to drain the water and any invasive species); and remove the drain plug to allow the bilge to drain. Then raise the outdrive from the transom and reposition for a wipe down of the boat. A little more than you wanted to know but that’s that’s our routine anyway.
Any pictures? And welcome aboard mate !

Actually, on my ‘19 R5 you have to have the key in the run (not running) position to trim up or down. Is that what you meant?Big Block Power wrote: Sun Sep 19, 2021 9:44 am Something isn't wired right if you can't trim it down or up with the engine off.

No I guess they changed it at some time. I can do mine with the key off.Snowman73 wrote: Sun Sep 19, 2021 7:09 pmActually, on my ‘19 R5 you have to have the key in the run (not running) position to trim up or down. It makes sense to me. I wonder why they changed it?Big Block Power wrote: Sun Sep 19, 2021 7:16 pmNo I guess they changed it at some time. Re: R6 - Trimming outdrive with engine off
So we went out for probably our last day on the boat this season..
My Volvo has to have the key in run for the trim to work.
Re: R6 - Trimming outdrive with engine off
Big Block - The battery switch is definitely still in the "On" position but with the ignition "Off", I cannot trim the out drive. The way I have handled this since I have owned the boat is to turn the engine off, then immediately turn the ignition back to "On". This allows me to trim the outdrive but it also restarts the Garmins. I have two concerns with that, first is I hate to cycle them needlessly and put unneeded wear and tear on those units. Secondly, since they take some time to boot up, the trim indicator on the Garmin screen is unavailable. I realize I can see the trim indicator on the backup Volvo display. It just seems like there should be a better way.

Do you have a transom trim switch. If not add that and then you can do it from the rear of the boat with the key off..

Re: R6 - Trimming outdrive with engine off
When I immediately turn the switch back to "on", my Garmins do not have to re-start. They stay on the entire time. I wonder if that means anything?MDKirk wrote: Sun Sep 19, 2021 8:37 pm The way I have handled this since I have owned the boat is to turn the engine off, then immediately turn the ignition back to "On". My 18 R7S was the same way if you try to use the trim switch on the throttle. I had the rear trim switch and it would work with the key on or off.

I completely forgot about this…..The Merc throttle has a separate trim switch underneath the throttle dedicated to raising the outdrive while the key is OFF. It’s called the trailer trim switch. Not sure how your VP set up is rigged since you haven’t posted a pic but it might be worth a look.

Re: R6 - Trimming outdrive with engine off
Volvo has just 1 switch. Push it up and it goes up. They are not like a Merc.AsLan7 wrote: Mon Sep 20, 2021 7:09 pm.MDKirk wrote: Sun Sep 19, 2021 8:37 pm Big Block - The battery switch is definitely still in the "On" position but with the ignition "Off", I cannot trim the out drive.
