Cobalt models pared back

Post by jhnmdahl »

From the website, it looks like Cobalt is discontinuing several models, including:

A25
A40 (non-coupe version)
All SD models
WSS models in the Gateway (200&220) and SD series

Probably not a bad move given their shift in direction. I still wonder about there being an R30 and R35, but nothing in the A series between the 28 and 40. Volume is on the low end for sure, so changes in the higher-end models may be slower in coming.

I personally won't be surprised if Cobalt releases a performance boat again in the near future.
Just speculating.
If I were behind the desk, and watching brisk sales of a high luxury item, I'm cashing in. I'm offering a new twin 350 outboard R5/R7, and a multiple 350 outboard R30/R35.
The tooling/molds/design are done. Adding HP always makes profit, especially since there will be minimal engineering/stock costs. The boats already exist, and my-my-my would a 700 hp R7 or a 1400 hp R30 make waves!

I called that one last year.
Must be happening now. I’m surprised they didn’t drop it when they dropped the 25.
I still believe my post above. Outboards will be coming...

Yes you did, T. I remember your quotes....
For me personally, I didn't even consider the "A" model. I think it's a heavier boat designed for gray haired, uptight old men. How's that for an impression?. :D . The swim deck tail fins? Nah, NFW, not for me.
JMO, I much prefer the modern lines of the R series. Pure boat sex when you stand and look at her lines... the interior looks much more spacious.
I wouldn't be surprised if the A series days are numbered, especially with new ownership.
Looks very dated to me, and I'm not sure where "luxury" comes into play with it.
IMO, I think it's clear that the future of Cobalt has been placed squarely with expanding the R series models and features

My crystal ball time... :P
I would bet that there are big changes coming to Cobalt within a couple of years.
Remember the Italian design just contracted? I'm sure that happened jointly between Cobalt and BU long before the close of their deal.

When I speculate the drop of the A model, IMO, It makes no sense developing a new R bowrider to compete in the exact same segment as the older A bowrider model unless they plan on replacing it. I can understand keeping the A model around for a couple of years in order to see how well the new R sells. It's clear as day that the R has taken over. I'm still surprised the A model even is available this year.
The R30 and R35 clearly is the direction for those who want larger and more luxurious, and Ive only seen one stock A25/28 available anywhere in the country, and its at Lodders.
Since BU concentrates on water sports, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to again compete with themselves. IMO I wouldn't be surprised to see Cobalt concentrate more on the bigger stuff, and expand on the A40 model, and maybe an even larger cabin cruisers.

I dont get this at all...i know its trending but why would anyone want an outboard on a cobalt style boat? Price and maintenance isnt justification IMO

IMO, we compare 380 vs. 430.
That difference is like splitting hairs.

8 1/2’ beams aren’t wide enough for twin stern drives, and power options are profitable and definitely sell.
How about the option of two 300s on an R5?
Twin 350s on the back of an R7?
Three for a R30?
Four for an R35 or maybe an R40 down the road?

Plus, if you go to coastal areas, EVERYONE runs outboards on boats this size.
The big boats run diesel.

Yep ive read articles about this but still dont get it. Part of the allure of these boats is hanging out on the back of the boat. A big ass outboard kinda ruins that IMO. Pkus they dont look as cool 😁
