Gear reduction starter...thumbs up!

Post by thunder550 »

I've had what I consider to be a slow-cranking engine since I got my boat, along with the occasional key turn with nothing more than a click from the engine area. Replaced the slave solenoid since it was cheap and easy to get to, but that did not remedy the situation. Finally got around to replacing the starter, which I think was the original direct drive type, with a new Arco permanent magnet gear reduction unit. Night and day difference. The slow crank always freaks me out, makes me think the battery is dead, especially when I turn the key and just get a click and nothing else.

Original starter, this is a "good" crank. It's even slower when warm, and at times I had to bump the key 2-3 times before it would do anything other than click.

New PMGR Arco starter.

First thing I checked. It wasn't a one-time occurrence, happened several times.

Roger that.
I find it peculiar that Volvo or Merc do not put more of a marking or indent for neutral on their shifting mechanism. It has kept our engine from turning over more than once— when out of the detent slightly.

Thx for starter vids.
Btw, I take it you are grounding the spark out for demonstration purposes in both those videos. Normally they would fire right up after a second or two.

I haven't had much problem with the throttle handle locking into neutral, just a quick forward and back motion seems to take care of it if there's any question. Maybe the different throttle handles operate differently?

I was jumping the slave solenoid, you can see the jumper clips I was using in the "new" video. This way engages the starter without energizing the ECM, so no fuel or spark.

Here's a before and after using the key. First crank of the day takes 1-2 seconds before it fires, subsequent cranks fire almost immediately.
