new Cobalt purchase

Post by Harbormaster »

Hello Harbormaster from Wi. here, I am now the owner of a 1988 Cobalt Condessa. when I saw it had to buy it. It had sat idle stored inside for 23 years. With only 120 hrs on it. It is equipped with a 7.4 Mercruiser with a bravo one out drive. To get it up and running I did the following removed all old fuel and cleaned the fuel tank, Removed all the spark plugs and oiled the cylinders with fogging oil, insalled new water pump, removed and cleaned the carburetor, turned engine over by hand, installed new spark plugs, changed engine oil and filter, replaced fuel-water seperator filter, installed new battery, drained lower unit and refilled. It fired up and runs great, now for some light detailing and to the lake test time

So glad you found us Hm…

Nice job updating the essentials. How are the trailer bearings, brakes, & tires? We’ve had more issues with our trailers than our boats in the past.

Any pics?

And welcome aboard mate!

Harbor, is that one of the models with teak? Gelcoat buffing videos are always fun to watch, but refurbishing teak can really bring a boat back to life.

Yes it has the teat swim platform and handeails as well as the teak trim on the interior, I gave my grandson the job of sanding down the swim platform and hand rails, he likes to see the benifits of labor.

Will post some pictures soon, the trailer required new tires the old ones looked liked new but were checked and I would not feel safe at highway speeds, one blowout on the interstate cost more than four new tires

". . . 7.4 Mercruiser with a bravo one out drive."

That is a great combination!

Change the impeller! Check carefully the hoses, belts and all boots. They can dry and crack over time. Check the thermostat. Get new trailer tires. Dry rot is the danger. Inspect the trailer bearings. Test the bilge pump and blowers. Inspect all wiring very carefully. Critters have been known to eat them. Grease the outdrive. Check for mold and mildew, especially in the cuddy.

Hopefully, the teak (and there's a ton of it) only needs light cleaning and oiling. Some of it is easy to remove. Others, not so much.

Add a bimini. It's easy. The factory convertible cover is worthless. (But don't throw it away!) If she doesn't have them, get full and cockpit covers.

I assume it's a roller trailer. Oil the hinges.

You might consider a new prop. They've improved dramatically in some 20 years.

BTW, it's "Condesa" not "Condessa." It means "Countess" in Spanish.
