Ha! You know those ads that pop up at the top and bottom of the feed? I can be looking for motorcycle tires on my laptop,and then whaddaya know, there in the feed are motorcycle tire ads when I bring up the feed on my phone. Cookie crumbs?

I often wonder if you guys can see that too, because from time to time I see some pretty strange ads, and I always wonder "hmmm. I wonder who is searching that stuff"?

YT, it's all from Google cookies on your various devices - our ads are all from Google Ads.

Some of the strange ads are advertisers who simply decided to outbid other advertisers for an ad presentation, and some advertisers are willing to pay way more than others even with relatively little reason to target you. E.g., your local car dealer may pay a fraction of a penny (to Google, not me) to show you an ad for a truck or for new tires, but if you've searched anything related to asbestos in the past week there will probably be a mesothelioma attorney who's willing to bid up to tens of cents to show you an ad offering to represent you in court. If you click on the ad, the fees they pay go way up, so the advertiser and Google both want to show you ads that are relevant to you. Some advertisers like dating sites often pay a lot to target anyone they can, irrespective of really knowing anything about you. And the algorithms mix up the ads, and use your prior demonstrated interest to send you ads you're more likely to follow (so you are more likely to click, and they make more $$$).

I can't remember how Cobalt chat's cut of the ads is calculated, but it's somewhere under half.

JL makes great stuff and its fun to see their new gear. That being said I totally agree, boats are crappy environments for listening and unless it’s an enclosed cabin in a cruiser, boat speakers are mounted in way less than ideal locations. Not one of the speakers in my R5 is in a good location(it’s simply not practical or possible to put speakers in and ideal location in a boat). If you want to EQ the sound and are listening through a smart phone, there are already some built in EQ functions on the phone and dozens of EQ apps that can be had for free or $.99. The problem with equalizing the sound is what’s good for one sitting location in a boat is likely not good for another. Again, boat simply suck a listening space.

The other really ironic thing is the majority of people listening to music on their expensive boat stereo system are streaming from something like Spotify or XM which are both super compressed audio formats. "Normal" spotify streaming on mobile devices is 96kbps, which is a crazy low bitrate. Their high quality option is 320kbps which is better but you are still losing sound quality. To make matters worse we are all connecting the audio source the stereo via bluetooth which further reduces the audio quality of the already compressed mp3's.

We are using spotify, I am working on talking Mrs. Nauti into finding room in the family budget to move to Tidal, it's more expensive but they stream full quality CD Quality in FLAC. We have an unlimited data plan on our cell phones - lets use it!

Don't get me wrong, music is ALWAYS playing on our boat. Like the majority of boaters, we just desire simple connecting, clear sounding, good bass pounding, and at times loud audio playing during our water sport activities.

Our home system is where the audiophile budget gets the nod....reproducing audio as if the artist is performing right there in front of you...comparing vinyl to digital....lossless audio....tweaking the sound, etc.

So team Nauti finally bit bullet and cancelled Spotify in favor of Tidal. I had to do several blind side by side listening tests to convince Katie, but in the end the difference between Tidal - which steams in FLAC - and Spotify which uses 160 - 320kbps mp3 was pretty noticeable on both our home stereo system as well as her dog Mom minivan.

Price difference is about $10 a month, but after all we have spent in boat audio gear sending compressed MP3's through it just seemed stupid.

Give Tidal a shot, great catalog and awesome sound quality. Just make sure you have an unlimited data plan on your phone.

I'm amazed they are cheaper than the M650's since the new ones include LED lighting. JL said they raised prices across the board due to trade tariff's on raw materials. Damn Trump. glad I got all our stuff ordered at old "cheap" prices.

With that being said, we subscribed to Tidal on our home system for awhile back in 2017. Nice service but we wanted a streaming service that provided hi resolution audio. It's just hard to beat the sound from a SACD. We canceled our Hi Fidelity (16bit 44.1 Khz) Tidal subscription and, at that time, there were no streaming services on the market that streamed HiRez audio.....now fast forward to 2019.....there is one called Qobuz. The monthly subscription rate is quite expensive but it does offer hi resolution streaming audio. (FLAC 24 bit 192Khz)

We are curious if anyone here has tried this service on their home system? MnLakeBum???

I'm not sure if my ears are good enough to tell the difference between 16bit 44.1kHz FLAC and 24bit FLAC.

Tidal did just release "tidal master encoding" which is 96kHz/24bit FLAC. I have found very little of their stuff is encoded that way, but it's apparently growing every day.

Sonos Makes the Connect which has an optical out to stream to your home audio gear, it will work /w Tidal.

So true. I don't think anyone can tell the difference on a boat (or even many home audio systems for that matter). And if they could, they are probably lying (or superhuman)

....Now on a $30,000+ audiophile system, well that's arguably a different story. 1 bit DSD encoding with a sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz is quite an upgrade from 16 bit PCM/44.1kHz).

In the FLAC hi-rez arena, not only is it lossless with no compression, it’s also the depth or dynamic range they dive into with each note (24 bits deep for hirez) & also how many times they sample it each second for accuracy of information in the recording (192kHZ hirez) that elevates the recording to studio quality. That’s music to my ears on a quality home system.

In any event, Sonos does not support hi resolution audio. I do remember giving Tidal Masters a try and it is certainly their attempt at Hi Rez audio (even at a 96kHz sampling rate). Like you said, it just did not offer much in terms of selection...unless you like the occasional opera piece.
