I don't think so brutha. The biggest you can get in your 22 footer is a 4.5L small block topping out at a whopping 250hp. Plus I'm not seeing any dreamsicle options. Your new name over there will be Noblockpower.

.
I got bb connections with merc. It's worth a try. Heck what's the biggest I can get now in a 220s.lol ummm. No Dreamsicle either 😂
.
Ya, I don't see you jumpin' ship to Bayliner just yet....not while Cobalt still has a 22 footer with a 350 horse Merc wrapped in your dreamsicle envy. ;)
Welcome back.

.
Whoa thanks for bringing me back to reality. I'll ask bobrae if that engine package will work. I need some specs on time to plane.

Well they use the same merc bb right?
I'm going to find a dealer tomorrow and see what I can get on a trade in for a new 8.2 22 Bayliner 22ss😂🤔
I bet I can even get CC!!

Archaic big blocks aren't needed anymore.... Here was the response from our local Cobalt dealer when I tried ordering a V8(tiny 5.3 mind you) and they have a V6 220 in stock

" the new 280 HP Duoprop will be a lot more responsive and efficient than an old big block. 280 HP out of a V-6 vs 310 HP out of a 7.4L"

 So you see you dont even need that grossly oversized 4.5 either
Needless to say that was the last communication I had with them.

Right. We will see how these 6.2 hold up at 5800 rpms. Vs a 8.1 at 5000. Yes I know how often do you run in that range. Um when I want to. Lol
I will say yes I get it. That big r7 with a 380 jumps on plane like a 22ft boat. That's pretty impressive. Give Cobalt props to hull design!!
But darn it give us a bb option on a 22ft boat and CC!! Bring the old days back.
Give us a option of a 520 in a R7. Darn it.

Well it’s 330 for the 7.4, but at 385/415hp for the mag motors that 280 isn’t even close, and that’s not even talking about the difference where it really matters, the torque!

I kid you not I copied that directly out of his reply. Now I dont mind cutting back a little on engine size but dont try and tell me a V6 is better than a 454 for power going up river....

I get it the guy is just trying to unload his aging stock, but when he starts blowing that up my keister ...

The dealer's point - which I'm sure you already know but if I can't be pedantic here, then where can I - is that you can't really compare modern engine tech to the cavemen-with-clubs big block stuff from the olden dayes.

Seriously, though, lots of factors go into engine performance today, not the least of which is software. And I'm pretty confident the dealer makes more selling the bigger engines, so if they are guiding you toward a V6 there's likely a good reason for it (like maybe an orphaned underpowered boat on their showroom floor for the last 9 months  ).

I'd still take a 6.2 over the V6, though. :D

It's true, we've had many Cobalts over the years. Had the 7.4L 310hp in our 2000 226 and currently have a 220 with the VP 300. The new 5.3 blows that 454 away in so many ways, just not on the top end, but some of that is due to hull designs and other factors. The big blocks were the prime of their time, and for many they still are to this day. I prefer not watching the gas gauge needle move while cruising down the lake, the 5.3 is very fuel efficient. Rumor has it the 280 has a better hole shot than the 300, different prop set and lighter, but I don't have anything to back that up.

I only burned maybe 20 gal of gas going 50 miles. Watsons to Indian point and back. Anytime I come back to the pump with gas still in the tank its a bonus. Thats pretty darn good at Ave speed of 38 or maybe a bit faster? Beat that Elroy!!

For what maybe 3 gal. I'll take the extra 130+ hp and torque. But it's all good and you can barely hear mine purr at 4000 rpms and yours screaming at 5000. 😱😱

 I don't own Cobalts for the speed, that's not what they're made for. I'd own a Donzi, Fountain or Formula if that's what interested me, you'll find me cruising around at 3,000 - 3,500. Bet I'd hang right with you 0 - 50 anyway, and yours tops out at what, 6 - 8 mph faster for all that extra power.
